Colors in Korean work differently from most languages because Korean has two color systems. And they behave differently grammatically.
Native Korean colors (adjectives)
These are the "true" Korean color words. They act like adjectives. They conjugate, come before nouns, and can be predicates.
| Color | Korean | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
| Red | 빨갛다 | ppalgatda |
| Blue | 파랗다 | paratda |
| Yellow | 노랗다 | noratda |
| White | 하얗다 | hayatda |
| Black | 까맣다 | kkamata |
| Green | 초록색이다 / 파랗다 | (see note) |
| Gray | 회색이다 | hoesaegida |
These follow irregular conjugation (ㅎ irregular): 빨갛다 → 빨간 (before noun) → 빨개요 (predicate, polite)
Using native colors before a noun
The adjective form (-ㄴ):
빨간 장미 : red rose 파란 하늘 : blue sky 노란 꽃 : yellow flower 하얀 눈 : white snow 까만 고양이 : black cat
Using native colors as predicates
The verb-like conjugation:
하늘이 파래요. The sky is blue. 이 꽃이 노래요. This flower is yellow. 그 가방이 까매요. That bag is black.
Sino-Korean colors (color nouns + 색)
These come from Chinese and are treated as nouns. They don't conjugate: you add 색 (色, saek = color) after the word.
| Color | Korean (with 색) |
|---|---|
| Red | 빨간색 / 적색 |
| Blue | 파란색 / 청색 |
| Yellow | 노란색 / 황색 |
| White | 하얀색 / 백색 |
| Black | 까만색 / 흑색 |
| Green | 초록색 / 녹색 |
| Purple | 보라색 |
| Orange | 주황색 |
| Pink | 분홍색 |
| Brown | 갈색 |
| Gray | 회색 |
| Beige | 베이지색 |
Which to use?
Native adjectives: for emotional, descriptive, vivid language: 빨간 입술 : red lips (evocative) 파란 하늘 : blue sky (poetic)
색 forms: for categories, shopping, labeling, neutral description: 빨간색 펜 주세요. Please give me a red pen. 무슨 색이에요? What color is it? 초록색 좋아해요. I like green. In practice, the 색 forms are used far more often in everyday speech. If in doubt, use X색: it's always safe.
Green vs blue in Korean
Korean traditionally used 파랗다 (blue) for what we'd call green: 파란 풀 : green grass (using "blue") 신호등이 파란색이에요. The traffic light is green. (Koreans say 파란색/blue)
Modern Korean has 초록색 for green (from plants), but 파랗다 still covers both blue and sometimes green in traditional or natural contexts. This causes confusion for learners.
Rule of thumb:
- Sky, ocean, eyes → 파란
- Plants, vegetables, nature → 초록
- Traffic light green → 파란 (traditional, still current)
Shopping vocabulary
무슨 색이에요? What color is it? 다른 색 있어요? Do you have another color? 하얀색으로 주세요. Please give me the white one. 이 색이 마음에 들어요. I like this color.
Colors seem simple but the dual system trips up many learners. A structured Korean vocabulary course groups related words together. So you learn colors as a set with their correct grammatical behavior from the start.
