Dates in Korean are more logical than in English. Once you know the pattern, everything follows.
Days of the week
Days in Korean all end in 요일 (yoil, "day of the week"):
| Day | Korean | Hanja meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 월요일 (woryoil) | 月 Moon |
| Tuesday | 화요일 (hwayoil) | 火 Fire |
| Wednesday | 수요일 (suyoil) | 水 Water |
| Thursday | 목요일 (mogyoil) | 木 Wood |
| Friday | 금요일 (geumyoil) | 金 Gold/Metal |
| Saturday | 토요일 (toyoil) | 土 Earth |
| Sunday | 일요일 (iryoil) | 日 Sun |
These follow the Chinese Five Elements + Sun and Moon. The same system is used in Japanese. Learning the Hanja (木, 火, 水, 金, 土) makes them easier to remember.
Shorthand: 월, 화, 수, 목, 금, 토, 일 (used in calendars, schedules)
Months
Months are just Sino-Korean numbers + 월 (month):
1월 = 일월 (January) through 12월 = 십이월 (December)
No special names. 3월 = 삼월 (March). 11월 = 십일월 (November). It's completely regular.
Date format
Korean dates go: Year → Month → Day (largest to smallest)
2026년 4월 10일 = April 10, 2026
년 = year, 월 = month, 일 = day
Reading: 이천이십육 년 사월 십일 일
