K-Pop Vocabulary Guide: What Are They Actually Saying?

A guide to Korean vocabulary that appears constantly in K-pop lyrics, fan culture, and idol content, with grammar notes so you understand why.

K-pop is one of the biggest motivators for learning Korean. If that's why you're here, good. It's a legitimate and effective gateway. Here's the vocabulary you keep hearing.

Words in almost every K-pop song

사랑 (sarang): love 사랑해 : I love you 사랑해요 : I love you (polite) 우리의 사랑 : our love

그대 (geudae): you (poetic/formal, used in songs, not everyday speech) Real everyday "you" is 너 (casual) or 당신 (formal, can feel cold) In songs: 그대가 보고 싶어: I miss you (poetic)

(nae) / (ni): my / your (casual) 내 마음 : my heart 니가 좋아 : I like you

마음 (maeum): heart/mind/feelings 네 마음이 보여 : I can see your heart 마음이 아파 : my heart hurts

(kkum): dream 꿈을 꾸다 : to have a dream 내 꿈 : my dream

(bit): light 네가 나의 빛이야 : you are my light

(byeol): star 별처럼 빛나 : shining like a star

하늘 (haneul): sky/heaven

눈물 (nunmul): tears 눈물이 나 : tears are falling

행복 (haengbok): happiness 행복해 : I'm happy

외로워 (oeorowo): I'm lonely (외롭다 = to be lonely)

기다려 (gidaryeo): wait for me / I'm waiting (기다리다 = to wait)

Fan culture vocabulary

아이돌: idol (from English "idol")

그룹: group (idol group)

컴백: comeback (new album/comeback stage)

뮤직비디오 / MV: music video

티저: teaser (pre-release teaser)

팬미팅: fan meeting event

콘서트: concert

응원봉: light stick (fandom-specific glow stick)

포토카드 / 포카: photo card (collectible card from album)

직캠: fancam (close-up fan-recorded video)

입덕: falling into a fandom (becoming a fan) 입덕 계기 : what made you become a fan

탈덕: leaving a fandom

최애: ultimate bias (most beloved)

올클: all clear = collecting all content

덕질: fan activity / being obsessed with fandom

Common idol phrases you'll hear

감사합니다: Thank you (during performances)

사랑해요, 아미!: I love you, ARMY! (substitute fan name)

열심히 할게요: I'll work hard

잘 부탁드립니다: Please take care of us / I'm in your care

고생했어요: You worked hard (said to members/staff)

다 같이!: All together!

한 번 더!: One more time!

Grammar patterns in lyrics

~고 싶어: I want to (see earlier post) 네 곁에 있고 싶어 : I want to be by your side

~ㄹ/을게: I will (promise/intention, speaker-only) 기다릴게 : I'll wait for you 잊지 않을게 : I won't forget

~잖아: you know / isn't it obvious 우리가 함께잖아 : we're together, you know

~나봐: it seems like / I guess 나 너를 좋아하나봐 : I guess I like you
